Gond Tribals Come Alive At Goethe Zentrum

The Raj Gonds of Adilabad found a home outside of their own at Goethe-Zentrum, Hyderabad on International day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples on August 9. The guests who arrived at Goethe-Zentrum braving the rain were treated to 36 visuals of S. Harpal Singh exhibited along with over 12 visuals of a known Gond relative, Christoph von Fuerer-Haimendorf and his student Michael Yorke.

After a brief introduction by Amita Desai, Sumanaspati Reddy moderated the entire evening, passing the mike to S. Harpal Singh followed by a brief talk by Gond Raja Athram Bheem Rao of Kanchanpalli. Popular dignitaries of Telangana Culture B V Papa Rao, Policy & Institutional Development Advisor, and R V Karnan, Project officer, Integrated Tribal Development Agency, Utnoor and Collector, Mancherial were present at the event.

The music played by the Gondi musicians, a Thoti troupe headed by Kumra Lingu, who is the last known Gondi to perform on the musical instrument called the Keekri filled the room with a true feeling of being one among them. Other members of the troupe were Kumra Lingu, lead singer and Jatur and Keekri; Kumra Sonubai and Marsukola Kalavati, co-singers; Kumra Raju, Dholak; Marsukola Prabhudas, Dhakki; and Kaatle Maruti, Manager.
